Souvenir Sunday Sketches: Prague
Greetings my lovely friends! Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!! It's Sunday today, that means I’m drawing your favourite travel destinations today!
Today we’re going to Prague, the beautiful capital of the Czech Republic! This travel destination was submitted by my friend and fellow illustrator Ellen Lambrichts. Thanks Ellen!
The previous locations I drew for #SouvenirSunday were places I haven’t been to yet, but Prague is actually a place I’ve visited before and I agree with Ellen that it’s definitely worth it!
I drew the Charles bridge today, aka the old tower bridge, built in medieval times and one of the must see sights in Prague.
Drawing more freely
Since I started with my Somewhere in the Wild Project one of my goals has been to learn to draw faster and more loose. My ‘old’ style of drawing was always quite slow, being a super control freak, paying close attention to all the details and making sure every texture, colour and shadow was right…
Last week I drew the Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland, a beautiful green mountain landscape dotted with just a few buildings, and that sort of scenery allows me to easily draw more freely and loose.
This week, with Prague, I’m drawing an urban setting and here I still struggle to draw fast and freely. My initial sketch was still very loose but while adding the colour layers I got drawn into the details of the buildings, which automatically slowed me down. And I right away notice this makes my work feel less dynamic…
I’m still happy with the result. Adding in the warm light and the shadows, the clouds, a few people and even the hand lettering has made it come more alive… but I would love to get better at drawing urban settings faster and more freely. I think next time I’ll have to set a timer and really try to stick to it!
